February Fellowship Breakfast

If it's one thing our congregation loves to do, it's EAT! We meet on the last Saturday of the month at a local diner and enjoy fellowshipping outside of church. What started out as a "Men's Breakfast" quickly became breakfast for the entire family because our women just couldn't stay away! And you know what? The men didn't really seem to mind! 4 Simple Ways to Have Your Best Year Ever

Ralph Waldo Emerson suggested that one should write on his heart that every year can be the best year he ever lived. I’ve put together a very short list of things you can do to realize Emerson’s promise.

1. Start “in the beginning.”
The first four opening words of the Bible—"In the beginning, God..."—will see you throughout the year. In all things, remember God at the start of each day, each project at work, each challenge you face, and you will have a wonderful time in the new year.

2. Practice the art of forgetting.
Man is what he remembers, but man is also what he forgets. One of the healthiest things a human being can do is to become a master of forgetting. Whatever you do, don't lug around your resentments, your hates, your frustrations, your disappointments, or your regrets into the new year. Forge ahead! It is a great art to know how to forget. Drop it, skip it, let it go. Whatever it is, start anew.

3. Take hold of the new year and shake the life out of it.
Drop the "T" off "forget" and forge ahead. Live a day at a time and take it as it comes. Live a day at a time and live on the basis of easy does it. Don't get too worked up about things. Just take them as they come.

4. Expect great things and put your life in God's hands.
Have high hopes, have great dreams, have great belief. See visions and believe in them. Believe that life is good and that it’s going to be better. You know something? You are very likely to get just what you expect.

Friend Day Dinner

It's that time of year again when we invite all our friends and family to join us for Friend Day! Worship begins at 10am, and the dinner will begin afterwards. This year the congregation will be bringing dishes to pass, so we'll have a potluck extraordinaire. We don't disappoint when it comes to food and fellowship, so please join us!

Birds of Prey

We hope you didn't miss out on this spectacular event! Birds of prey were brought into the sanctuary during Kids Klub on Wednesday, October 22nd. Families were able to learn about the birds and see them in action up close. We also got to pet some of them after the program.

Everyone enjoyed the birds so much that they begged to have them come again next year. Most people preferred them over the snakes we've had before!

We're Going on a Hayride

WE ARE WESLEYANS (History of Midler Ave Wesleyan Church)
Some of the finest Christian people on earth help to make up the growing Wesleyan Church family. While many are second and third generation Christians with a long and rich heritage in the basic principles of the Church, other congregations are being formed in fulfillment of Christ's example to go "into the next towns." The fellowship is thus being enriched through growth. The process of nurturing Christians after the New Testament example is going forward. The number of churches and Sunday schools recently established in strategic centers of population is most encouraging. In these congregations, church responsibility is being assumed by those only lately called from a totally different kind of life, while historic congregations help prayerfully and financially to get the pioneer churches on their way. Sometimes it is the younger pastor and sometimes the older one who accepts the call to help get a church started, but always there is the rewarding experience of new spiritual life, answer to prayer, discipling of new believers, resulting in the establishment of an additional place where Christ-centered worship is enjoyed.

The Wesleyan Church emphasizes the cultivation of a deeply spiritual life and the practice of godly living. Never in her history were her channels open more widely for evangelism, revival, church extension, worldwide missions, and for the instruction of all ages in the Word of God.

The beginning of this "religious work" dates back to June 4th, 1896, when it formed as The Eastwood Union Church. The small group met in homes until 1906, when they called for the leadership of Rev. John S. Willett, employed at the time by The Wesleyan Methodist Connection of America as Assistant Editor of the church paper. Mr. Willett preached for the first time in July of 1906. In 1907 the group voted to be a part of The Wesleyan Methodist Church, and in 1915 completed the new building. Historical records of 1907 note this as the only church in Eastwood at the time. In 1918 the present 1,400 lb. bell was placed in the belfry, and still rings every Sunday calling Eastwood people to worship. Dr. John S. Willett served as pastor for 28 years. At his death in 1935 the church was renamed Willett Memorial Wesleyan Methodist Church in his memory.

In 1968 when The Pilgrim Holiness Church and The Wesleyan Methodist Church merged, the denominational name became The Wesleyan Church, and Willett Memorial was renamed Midler Avenue Wesleyan Church, yet remaining as a memorial to Dr. Willett.

Ministries

Christian Education program Sunday mornings from 10:00 to 10:45. Classes for children, and adults, for all ages.

Klubhouse - AKA Kids Klub
A Wednesday night program for children from grades K through 6; filled with activities, crafts, bible lessons, and music. (suspended during summer months)

Bible Study
Bible studies and study groups are held throughout the year to accommodate various levels of spiritual need. There is currently a study for adults on Sunday evenings at 6:00 in the overflow room, a home study Tuesdays at 6:15, and a senior's study at Ross Towers, Wednesdays at 1:30pm. (Sunday evening Bible Study suspended during summer months)

Men's Ministry
The men of the church meet once a month, usually the last Saturday, for fellowship and prayer over fine breakfast foods at the No Name Diner on New Court Ave. Check the calendar for this month's date.

Missions
Our church is committed to a "world view" of the Christian faith, and we strongly support our missionaries. We encourage the development of short-term mission teams and the call of God to missions involvement at every level.

Youth and Young Adult
There are programs for Junior Teens, Senior Teens, and Adults. Regular meeting and activities change from time to time. For information on youth ministries, see the calendar or call 463-7994.
